Memorial Day weekend was a memorable experience. I decided to spend the weekend busking in Maryland, leaving early Friday morning and arriving at Fells Point, Baltimore Inner Harbor, early enough to get a good parking place. I had never performed in Baltimore, but have always loved Fells Point, the home of some great live music venues like The Horse You Came in On Saloon, The Admiral’s Cup, and Bertha’s. I wasn’t planning to play in one of those prestigious places. I just wanted to set up on the street next to all the restaurants and sing for tips for an hour or so.
I got set up alright. Even sang some songs – two to be exact – before a microburst (mini tornado) blew through the area and put me out of business… big time. My sound gear, my guitar, my dog, everything I had was soaked before I had a chance to get it under cover. I packed everything up as quickly as I could and headed for the car. The day in Baltimore was ruined. I needed to get somewhere I could dry out my stuff.
Saturday was a much better day. My final destination for the weekend was always planned to be Annapolis, and the day was forecast to be sunny and warm. The weather guys got it right. The weather was perfect. I arrived there early enough to get a parking spot right next to where I planned to perform, the Kunta Kinte - Alex Haley Memorial next to the Annapolis Market House. I had busked there a couple times last fall and was made to feel very welcome by the touristy crowd as well as the management and staff of the Market House.
Here is the view from where I was performing. Gorgeous! And as expected, the people there were amazing. They made requests and sang along, all while being generous with their wallets. I did four sets there from Saturday through Monday and had a blast the whole time! I expect to return there as often as I can this summer.
For those who are wondering, I am still available to play for private parties. Just let me know when and where. I’m not too keen on playing bars any more, but if you own a bar near Annapolis, give me a shout.
